I know these are touchy subjects for some, but let me tell you our
experience.
Last May on a scheduled Baltic cruise muy husband took ill less than 48
hours out of our starting port. It was decided by the ship's doctor that
he be taken to a hospital as his blood count was very low and we were
going to be at sea the next day. Taken to a small hospital on an island
is southern Spain more tests determined that he had an aneurizm in
his stomach and needed immediate surgery. However this small
hospital was not equipped for this kind or surgery and he was air vac'd
to a larger hospital in Palma Mallorca, Spain. He was operated on almost
immediately and was in critical condition for several days.
Meantime I was taken to a very nice hotel from which I could walk to
the hospital. A week after the operation my husband (who was 78 years
old) got pneumonia, and again was in very critical condition. It was
decided by the hospital and our insurance company to send my daughter
over for my sake as well as her fathers.
To make a long story short my husband recovered to the point where he
was flown home accompanied by a nurse and we travelled first class. At this time he is still recovering but is stronger each day.
All this was covered by our insurance company. The hospital, hotel,
my daughter's flight over, all the expenses that I incurred and the flight
home. We figured that if we had not had the insurance coverage it would
have cost at least $200,000.00 for the 6 weeks we were in Spain and our
premiums were less that $2000.00 .
So believe me travel medical insurance is absolutely necessary wherever
one travels.

I am so glad to hear he is doing well and that your ins. company did the right thing. We always take travel insurance, I would never go without it, I get ours through CAA. It's expensive as we go for 4 months so I just had to put out over $650.00 for the two of us, but it's a heck of a lot better, than $200,000.

I wouldn't consider leaving home without it. You would have to take out a mortgage to pay the bills if you didn't have insurance.

Just think of it as part of the holiday package and it seems like pennies.

I'm very glad your husband is on the road to recovery. It must have been a very stressful time for the whole family.

So glad to hear you husband is progressing well, greenleaves. It sounds as if he got very good treatment. I'm interested to know what the ' island in southern Spain' was? The Canaries or the Balearics?
