Remember when you wrote on slates and used "slate" pencils. That was the time before paper and pencils, I think. How ancient is that. Didn't need an eraser back then. These slates were framed with wood and you had to be real careful not to drop it. It would shatter into many pieces. Then you would have to used the biggest piece until you got a new one.
So what do you remember? Anything will do. _________________ “Wisdom is knowing what to do next, skill is knowing how to do it, and virtue is doing it.”

I don't remember using slates, only pencils and paper, but then - my memory ain't what it used to be LOL
I do remember some pretty mean teachers and a horror of a headmistress. _________________ see our backup forum here and register

I remember the wooden framed slates. We used chalk on them, like a blackboard. I still have one... lots of stuff to get rid of someday.
I guess the slate was what we used before they invented notebook computers... like a PDA... nowadays, I use a Palm Pilot... very handy. |

Welcome back Jazz. Is your slate the large one, about 9" X 14"?
Come on everyone, share your memories. _________________ “Wisdom is knowing what to do next, skill is knowing how to do it, and virtue is doing it.”

The only slates I remember were the old blackboards in the
classroom and not liking the job of cleaning them and having to
beat the erasers until you were choking in chalk dust!!

| I remember struggling to write by dipping those long ink pens (with the metal tips) into the bottles of ink sitting on your desk. Never could write quickly or neatly for that matter with those awful things. |

Remember the big ink stains left on the wooden desks and your fingers. The desks had holes (ink wells) where the bottles were placed.
The chalk from those blackboards created so much dust. Do they still use blackboards or has the computer taken over? When was the last time you visited a school or attended classes? _________________ “Wisdom is knowing what to do next, skill is knowing how to do it, and virtue is doing it.”

The size of my little chalk board is about 8' x 10'.
You can't write very much on it at a time.
Hey, have you tried to buy chalk lately... not easy to find.
The neat thing about my board is you can use it as either portrait or landscape... isn't that amazing?
It is not high resolution - he he. |

LOL Sure is amazing.
Remember polka dots, big ones, little ones.
Remember going to the A & W Drive in. They would serve you on roller skates and hang a tray on the window and serve a big mug of root beer and, oooh, a real hamburger to die for. Then off to Dairy Queen for that large, delicious, chocolate dipped cone. _________________ “Wisdom is knowing what to do next, skill is knowing how to do it, and virtue is doing it.”

We still have a Drive Inn. The car hops comes to your car with (I believe) the same trays they used 20 years ago and says "Roll your window up a bit please". She places the tray with a ice covered mug of Root Beer on the side of the window. The mugs are the same but don't have the A&W logo on them. The Root Beer still tastes like the A&W Root Beer tasted. It just cost more money...
Every so ofter the car hops will wear those new type of roller blades they use now. It is fun to see them roll around holding the trays with the 'Root Beer and Burgers with fries on them. Sure brings back some great memories.
I can remember going to the Drive Inn movies with a car load of kids on Buck night. Monday nights was dollar night for as many as you could cram into your car. Our car was always packed like a can of sardines.
Then there was the Roost that was a soda fountain and was busting at the seams with noisy teenagers. The jukebox was blaring out Elvis tunes.
The teen dances at the town hall. The hall was up a long flight of stairs. It is miracle that the floor never gave out and fell to the first floor as there was so many kids packed in there dancing up a storm.
How many of your girls remember playing jacks? How about jumping rope. Do you remember jumping rope to " Sally ate a pickle, Sally ate a pie, Sally ate some sauerkraut and thought she would die. Up came the pickle, up came the pie, up came the sauerkraut and Sally didn't die. I'm not sure if I got that little rhyme correct. Does anyone remember any other jump rope rhymes?
How about "Step on a crack, break your mothers back"? We were always so careful not to step on a crack.
How about pop guns, Black Jack Chewing Gum, Penny Candies, little wax pop bottles, 3 cent movies. Penny loafer, saddle shoes, duck tail hair cuts that the teenage boys wore. Beehive hair for the girls. The list is endless. |

Did you pull all that out of your memory, aurua? You are good. Now lets see.
Didn't know we still had car hops at A & W. Ever seen one flip? ouch!!. There are still teen dances at the community center. I remember the drive in movies but not going by the carload.
I remember playing jacks and the jumping rope but not the rhymes. Yes I remember the pop guns, penny candies , little wax pop bottles, penny loafers which were a part of my school uniform. I had saddles shoes and I remember the behive . Did they have a doo called the French roll? HOw about pony tails?
How about poodle skirts? Did you have one? What colour? Did any of the guys play marbles? Did you collect them?
Remember American Bandstand, Superman, The Twlight zone, One Step Beyond? All those westerns? _________________ “Wisdom is knowing what to do next, skill is knowing how to do it, and virtue is doing it.”

There's a drive in about 15 mins away from us but we've never gone to to it...
I sure remember American Bandstand, used to rush home from school to watch that. - _________________ see our backup forum here and register

Yes I pulled that all out of my memory..
I had a navy blue poodle skirt with a white poodle on it. LOL I forgot about that.
Yes the boys played marble. So did a few of us girls. I had a huge collection of marbles that I gave to my kids.
I use to wear a french roll after I was married. I loved a pony tail and wore it often. I still see pony tails on the girls.
We didn't get TV here till in about 1955. I do remember a few of those shows. We only had one channel and it wasn't too clear. Two of my favorite TV shows was the Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Show. I still watch them. We didn't get American Band Stand here. I had heard of it and never seen it till I went to visit my cousins in Dearborn Michigan for the summer one year. We did get some of the westerns. I forget the names of them right now. One had a heavy set guy called Horse or something like that? |

| Yes... remembered rushing home from school to watch American Bandstand everyday, to hear all the latest songs and to see what couples were dancing. Also enjoyed The Ed Sullivan Show on Sunday nights as they had quite a variety of entertainers. |
